Reasons for using multi-head transformers

A multi-tap transformer is a step-up (or step-down) transformer that has multiple taps on the primary winding or the secondary winding. The multi-tap transformer provides flexibility for your input and output voltage requirements and can adjust the voltage/turn ratio to compensate for line voltage drops and voltage percentage adjustments.


Multi-Tap transformers are a wide range of single-phase and three-phase distribution transformers, mainly used for the strict duties of downhole submersible pumps, surface pumps, and variable speed drive applications(Smart Servo Transformer). The Multi-Tap transformer can provide full load current in a wide range of secondary taps in 25 or 50 externally selectable positions.

The transformer made of tapped windings is officially called a self-coupling transformer, which is a transformer that couples and transforms the windings of the same loop. The main feature of the self-coupling transformer is that there is no insulation between primary and secondary roles, so it is also called a non-isolated transformer.


The number of taps is a concept in transformers. The more taps, the more voltage signals we can get. In the filter, each stage saves a delayed input sample, and the input connection and output connection of each stage are called taps.

Professional installers use lower gauge (thicker) wires to reduce voltage loss. However, sometimes it is impossible to avoid the long-term operation or high power requirements. Conditions such as these can cause voltage losses, and multi-tap transformers are usually the only way to solve this problem.


The function of the tapped coil is generally used as a coupling transformer, and the variable-ratio can be adjusted if the tap can slide. Furthermore, it can be used as a neutral point to reduce the number of rectifier tubes. The disadvantage is that the voltage drops but the current increases. Coil usually refers to a loop of wire winding. The most common coil applications are motors, inductors, transformers, and loop antennas.
